The building, in Clements Road, opened its doors again last month after it was closed for renovation work.

Naomi Clifton, who runs the church with husband John, said: “We wanted our building to reflect the Salvation Army’s work - welcoming, inclusive and focused on the needs of others.

“We will continue to offer activities to meet people’s individual needs while adapting to the changing ones of our community.”

A National Churches Trust grant of £10,000 helped fund the project which included a new kitchenette, a main hall, disabled toilets and a job club.

“It is our hope the improvements will enhance our ability to care for those who are vulnerable in Ilford,” added Mrs Clifton.

Mike Gapes, MP for Ilford South, took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

He said: “The Salvation army have done a fantastic job in serving the community for over 100 years. It is a fantastic building.

“They have now completely refurbished it so it is available for many more years to come.”
