Ilford’s Telugu heritage group helps youngsters to learn new dance moves

Youngsters tried out classical Indian and Bollywood dance moves on Saturday with the Telugu Association of London (TAL) in Ilford.
The group’s east London branch, based in the Cardinal Heenan Centre, High Road, also gives young people aged four and upwards violin, cultural and language lessons.
The charity, which is open to all, was set up to promote the cultural heritage of the Telugu community, who speak the second most common language in India, in the UK.
Cultural secretary Rajireddy Myakala, 44, said: “We want to integrate but keep our roots alive.
“We want to keep the language because most of the people lose the language.”
TAL also runs seminars for parents to help them with the education system, a women’s forum and chess competitions.
It was previously housed at the London Institute of Technical Education in Cranbrook Road, Ilford, but moved to the Cardinal Heenan Centre last summer.
Saturday classes run from 9am-1pm and cost £5 per class, with lessons also available for adults.
