An Ilford mum is calling for cleaner streets after her son was hurt when he slipped on rubbish on his way home from nursery.

Mohammed Ali needed stitches after falling on dog mess and litter near his school.

Three-year-old Mohammed Ali Mudassir needed stitches to his face after badly cutting it in the fall in Uphall Road last week (Monday 26).

Mum Noreen Mudassir said: “He was getting into the car and his back foot slipped on wet leaves, litter and dog poo.

“He broke a tooth and went to have stitches on his face at Queen’s Hospital.

“It was cut right through.”

Mrs Mudassir said Mohammed is better but still finds drinking difficult after the accident.

The mum of four said she had heard of other children slipping on litter around Uphall Primary School.

She added: “Even I have slipped, it’s happening all the time.

“It was only a matter of time before someone got hurt and unfortunately it was my little boy.

“It’s not just dog poo, it’s condoms as well.

“My daughters don’t know what they are and walking past them after picking your children up from school is something else.”

Uphall Primary School headteacher Sherlyn Ramsay said dog fouling was a particular problem.

She added: “It’s been an ongoing battle and last year the parents did a petition but the council are helping.

“Parents have to walk through a mire of dog mess. People seem to think they can get away with it because it’s a backstreet.

“I haven’t heard of any other falls but for us the main concern was the health risk with the children bringing it in on their feet.

“People need to be more responsible, they dump bags of stuff and mattresses sometimes too.”

The council has organised cleans in Uphall Road to remove dog mess and is looking into paving over an area used for tipping and fouling.

A CCTV camera could also be installed to catch offenders and a dog bin may be put in the road.

A spokesman said: “The council is working hard to introduce a range of actions to eradicate this issue and punish those responsible.

“This is the first time the council has received a complaint about condoms being left by the school but we will take this complaint seriously and investigate it.”
