Relatives and friends of Patricia Gilmour and Glynis Taylor braved the rain to watch the trees planted in Brocket Close, Hainault – where both women lived.

They were partly paid for by a couple who live in the road, together with Redbridge Council.

Patricia died of cancer on July 16, aged 63 . She had lived in Brocket Close for more than 30 years.

Her widower Richard, 63, said: “I can’t put into words what it means to the family, I really can’t.”

The father of two and grandfather of one added: “My grandson tied a ball around the tree at the end – he wanted to put something on there by himself.”

David, whose wife Glynis, 57, died in January of pneumonia, said the planting went very well.

The 60-year-old, who has three children and six grandchildren, said he will regularly go out to the green to see the trees.

Plaques with words chosen by both women’s husbands were erected on the trees on Friday.
