The “hero” coach driver who looked after an elderly woman after a fall in Barkingside has been traced after a Recorder appeal.

Shirley Millett, 76, asked the mysterious man who helped her to come forward so she could thank him.

After seeing the article, David Bendrey revealed himself to be the good Samaritan.

Shirley had just got off the 167 bus in Cranbrook Road when she fell over last month.

She broke her glasses and bruised and scratched her face.

Coach driver David said: “I slowed up for the bus to pull away and saw the lady fall.

“I pulled over into the bus stop, helped her up and got her some baby wipes to clean her face.

“Then I asked where she lived and took her back home and into her flat.”

Shirley, of Churchill Lodge, Barnardo Drive, called the 49-year-old a “hero” for his kindness.

She said: “I thought it was very nice. I don’t know what would have happened if he hadn’t come along.”

But David doesn’t see his actions as special.

He said: “I’m just a human being, if it you were lying on the pavement at the side of the road you’d hope someone would do the same.

“So many people would just drive past but it’s not in my nature.”

David owns coach company Chiltern Travel with his wife Tracey. The couple have two coaches based in Ilford.
