The officers at Hainault Fire Station, in New North Road, did the daring demonstrations as part of an open day.

Onlookers watched fire crews with ladders rescue “victims” from the station tower and create fireballs to show the dangers of pouring water into chip pans.

They also used cutting equipment to free a person from a crushed car.

Watch manager Tom Edwards said more than 800 people attended the event.

He added: “I think everyone enjoyed it. It was busier than we thought it would be and the weather was marvellous as well.

“The open days have fallen by the wayside in the last few years because of industrial action but now they’re back on.”

Mr Edwards thanked Cliff Ashton and the firefighters and volunteers who helped on the day.

A barbecue and refreshments were on offer and fire safety advice was also given out.

Free safety advice and smoke alarm fittings are available from fire stations across the borough.
