There were “smiley faces” all round at Valentines High School after students discovered their A-level results.

About 28 per cent of students achieved A* and A grades and 84pc took away A* to C grades.

Acting headteacher Richard Laws said: “We are delighted with the results. Many of our students have exceeded expectations and are going to top universities.

“There were lots of smiley faces.”

Among those celebrating was Isaac Everingham, 18, who achieved A*s in maths, physics and chemistry and an A in his further maths AS-level.

He is hoping to study a four-year engineering degree at Cambridge University.

He said: “I am feeling relieved mainly. One of my exams was quite difficult.

“I worked hard for this.”

Friends Gursharan Bharaj, 18, and Poppy Stevenson-Hanns, 17, were also pleased with their results.

Gursharan took away As in biology, chemistry and maths, while Poppy achieved an A* in psychology and Bs in biology and English.

Gursharan, who will study pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, said: “I feel really relieved to have gotten into university.

“I was expecting As and Bs so it is so good. I am really excited about university for the new experience and making new friends.”

Poppy, who hopes to study psychology at university, said: “I feel surprised. I didn’t expect to get an A*.

“I am really pleased.”
