Funky Mojoe in South Woodford is planning to open until 3am next month despite orders from the High Court to implement cut opening hours.

The club seemed to have lost its battle against licensing restrictions imposed by Redbridge Council in response to reports of noise and disorder earlier this month.

But now managers, who have not responded to repeated requests from the Recorder for information, are hailing “a whole new concept”.

A tweet from the bar’s official Twitter account yesterday evening read: “We are open Sat 8th March till 3am. A whole new concept coming to Funky Mojoe.”

Cllr Richard Hoskins, who had campaigned with residents for more than five years against late openings at the bar, said the move flew in the face of a High Court ruling earlier this month.

Cllr Hoskins said: “Funky Mojoe is cocking a snook at residents, the court and the council.

“If the council has granted this it’s insane.

“Even if it is only temporary - how many can they apply for?”

The future of the popular nightspot in Woodford Green High Road had looked uncertain when it was shut at the weekend.

A staff member speaking to the Recorder last week had denied closure rumours but the bar did not open on Friday and Saturday nights.

After almost a year battling against new licensing rules by Redbridge Council, the club lost its battle in the High Court earlier this month and was ordered to slash its hours.

A licensing review had followed years of residents’ complaints over noise and anti-social behaviour.

The times were restricted to “pub hours” - serving until 11pm Sunday to Thursday, and 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays - compared to 2.30am previously.

In a poll on the Recorder website, 34 per cent of voters who went to the club said they thought the new hours were too harsh.

About 27pc said the cut hours were fair but were not customers.

Funky Mojoe had encouraged their followers on social networks to vote.
