The owners of the club in High Road were told of the council’s decision to hold a licence review today.

A council spokesman said it follows a “series of incidents and complaints near the venue over a period of time”.

Around 50 people fought outside the club in the early hours of Sunday, with belts and bottles used as weapons, according to Cllr Richard Hoskins who viewed CCTV footage of the brawl.

Lynda Edwards, a resident of the Manor Court Lodge retirement estate next to the club, said: “Men and women were screaming, it was terrible.

“It was like a riot.”

A licensing sub-committee will review the licence.

This could include revoking the licence or reducing its hours so that the venue must close earlier.

Councillor Alex Wilson, the cabinet member for planning and public protection, said:

“We know that many residents are concerned about the incidents occurring around Funky Mojoe.

“The council has a duty to monitor licensed premises and we take this duty very seriously.

“We have worked very closely with the owners of the venue to resolve any issues that occur however, the community safety service has continued to receive a number of complaints from residents in relation to noise and public nuisance caused by the premises.

“We have come to the conclusion that a review of the premises is the only suitable next step.

“We understand residents have had concerns for some time and we have been closely monitoring the venue.

“We now believe we have gathered sufficient evidence to call a review.”

Within the next 28 days any interested party can join in the review process, including residents and the police.

A hearing date for the review to be heard by the sub-committee will then be decided.
