Former pupil returns as headmaster at Ilford school

A former pupil of a school in Ilford has returned years later as its headteacher.
Kulvarn Atwal was appointed the headteacher of Highlands Primary School, Highlands Garden the school he used to attend as a child.
Mr Atwal, of Ilford, said: “I’m really happy because all the children, parents and staff have made me feel really welcome, it’s been an exciting experience. It feels very strange to be back, some of the building is different but many aspects are very familiar.”
He was previously the deputy head of Uphall Primary School, Uphall Road, Ilford for five years and before that a teacher in Newham for eight years.
He took up his new role at the start of this school year.
He said: “I think that we have a responsibility to make a difference to children’s lives. It was the next challenge for me. I’m absolutely loving it.”
The school has more than 700 pupils and three forms of entry into each year.
He said: “I hope to maintain the excellent reputation and to ensure it becomes a centre of excellence.”
