Former councillor warns Redbridge Council against car park charge hike

A former councilor has warned Redbridge Council that the expected “savings” made by increasing parking charges in some areas could fall short of expectations.

Speaking at a meeting of the Area Five Committee on Monday, former Chadwell ward councillor Gary Staight said he had seen the use of car parks fall dramatically in recent years.

According to his own calculations, only six cars were parked in the car park in Goodmayes Road at 9.15am, while the car park in High Road, Seven Kings, was only 15 per cent occupied at 10am.

At 10.45am, he found 62 vehicles in Station Road, Chadwell Heath, car park and 19 in Wangey Road a few minutes later – both at half capacity.

Mr Staight said: “I remember when they got so busy we were discussing reserving short-term spaces for shop customers.

“There’s been a huge downturn in parking on the high streets and I think you’ll find the income will fall short.”

As part of the 2013/14 budget, which is currently under consultation, said funds would be generated by “the proposed adjustment of off-street and on-stret parking charges”.

A review of pricing structures, particularly charges for more than two hours, was proposed.

Residential permits, season tickets and short-stay parking would not be affected.

A report for the budget acknowledged that increased charges could result in a “downturn” in car park use.
