As firefighters embark on a 24-hour strike the London Fire Brigade has issued a warning to football fans against cooking after drinking alcohol during the World Cup.
During the tournament in 2010 there were approximately 20 house fires a day.
The evening schedule for matches in Brazil has spurred concerns that people will try to cook after consuming alcohol prompting the service to ask that fans to order takeaways instead.
London Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Redbridge, Steve Brown, said: “It’s very important that individuals remain safe when cooking and the general message is do not leave cooking unattended.
“If you are enjoying yourself it has the potential to become unattended without you knowing and it’s important people are vigilant.”
Cdr Brown urged people to ensure they had working and tested smoke alarms.
Today’s latest strike in the longest yet in a dispute about pension terms. It will end at 9am tomorrow (13).
