Television crews are believed to be filming a Second World War period drama in the hospital’s disused Victorian buildings.

Ilford firefighters were called to the hospital in Barley Lane around 1pm on Tuesday and put out a small electrical fire started by equipment.

Officers at the scene said a small part of the set received minor damage. No one was injured.

Dharam Sahdev, of The Crescent, Gants Hill, was killing time before an appointment when he saw film crews in the hospital car park.

He said: “It was an unusual scene so I asked the people what was going on and they said it was a World War Two period drama for ITV.

“I didn’t see any actors but they had vans for food and costumes.”

A spokesman for the North East London NHS Foundation Trust said patient care was not affected by the filming.

As reported in last week’s Recorder, the original Victorian buildings no longer house patients and may be sold off for residential development.

ITV have not confirmed if they are filming on the site.
