Bogus police officers are conning their way into elderly women’s homes in Redbridge to steal cash and jewellery.

The fraudsters burgled three homes in a day on Monday in Mossford Lane, Barkingside, Stoke Avenue, Hainault and Herent Drive, Clayhall.

Redbridge Police said in all three cases the suspects were two men posing as police officers who flashed “some sort of ID” to gain entry.

Money and jewellery was stolen from three women described as “elderly and vulnerable” by police.

Det Supt Ellie O’Connor said becoming a victim of thieves in the home can leave a feeling of insecurity that remains for years.

She added: “These unscrupulous criminals are targeting the most vulnerable members of our community.

“Plain clothed police officers would not visit anyone at home without prior appointment.

“It is okay to be suspicious and to tell strangers to come back when a friend or relative can be with you.”

She urged anyone who knows or cares for someone elderly or vulnerable to ensure they are aware of the con artists.

Anyone faced with a persistent caller should shut the door and dial 999.

To check the validity of anyone claiming to be a police officer, call 101 to confirm their identity.
