Children travelled to Wembley to be part of the UK’s first “We day”, an event designed to recognise the efforts and voluntary work of pupils in their communities.
Seven Redbridge schools were involved including Highlands Primary, Ilford Jewish Primary, John Bramston Primary and Redbridge Primary.
The event came after the success of the Mayor of London’s Team London Young Ambassadors Programme, set up in September with the aim of getting more young people involved in voluntary work and social action in their local communities.
The event was organised by Free the Children. Guests included Prince Harry, Nobel Peace Prize-nominated schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai and singers Ellie Goulding and Jennifer Hudson.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “It’s fantastic that our Young Ambassadors programme has already met its target of 400 schools for the year.
“As a result, more schoolchildren across the capital are going into their communities, undertaking a huge variety of activities dealing with a range of issues.”
