Youngsters at Newbury Park Primary School, Perrymans Farm Road, Ilford, have been learning about the Olympic and Paralympics Games ahead of this year’s London events.

They heard first-hand from four-time Paralympic medal winner Sophie Christiansen.

Sophie took an assembly with year six pupils and told them about her sporting career.

The equestrian competitor, who has cerebral palsy, was made an MBE in 2009 and won two gold medals at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.

She toured the school to see the work the children have been doing about the Games.

Classes have been allocated countries competing at London 2012 to research and have also written to Olympic and Paralympic athletes including Mo Farah.

Frankie Chissim, the school’s community cohesion co-ordinator, said: “Sophie was brilliant - the kids were in awe of her.”

Cllr Felicity Banks, a Liberal Democrats councillor for Roding ward, and David Swindon, a former Barkingside police officer, both visited the school during the week to talk about the 1948 London Olympics.
