Diamond Jubilee: Partiers see double in Wanstead as karaoke proves a big hit

It was double Jubilee celebrations in Nightingale Lane, Wanstead as residents had a street party on Saturday and were part of the Big Lunch on Sunday.
About 150 people came together for the street party, with face painting, pavement chalking and egg and spoon races for the children, and a barbecue and karaoke.
Organiser Anna Midlane said: “It was a massive success. We were supposed to finish at eight but people were still outside at 10 o’clock.
“I think the karaoke we had at the end really made it. Everyone wanted a go. It was lovely how everyone made an effort and put their bunting and chairs out.
“I was worried there wouldn’t be much of a response but it was great. I think there were people who had lived in the road for years but didn’t know their neighbours so it was a lovely way for us to all come together.”
Anna wanted to arrange a street party for the Royal Wedding last year but was pregnant. This year she wasn’t, and son Jenson, eight months, enjoyed it too.
While the weather was sunny on Saturday, rain failed to dampen the spirits of revellers at the Big Lunch on Sunday at Nightingale Green.
The event was organised by publican Noel McMahon, whose pub is on the green.
The Nightingale Jazz Quartet, drinkers from the pub, entertained, as children enjoyed a bouncy castle and revellers tucked into a barbecue, Pimm’s and Mob’s Hole beer.
The area was once known as Mob’s Hole and the beer was brewed for the occasion.
Nearby Indian restaurant The Lane was also dishing up food and there were stalls manned by Wanstead and Woodford Friends of the Earth and Snaresbrook Rotary Club.
Photographer Geoff Wilkinson, who has a studio in Nightingale Lane, was inviting revellers in to dress up and have a Jubilee picture taken, with some of the proceeds going to the Blind Veterans UK charity.

Brick Lane Comedy Festival cancelled after opposition from community groups
A comedy festival in east London due to feature acts including Al Murray, Alan Davies and Ed Byrne has been cancelled because of “heavy opposition from local community groups”.
