The owners of the newly-crowned best pub in Redbridge have put their success down to the classic combination of a curry and a pint.
The Ash Grove in Green Lane, Goodmayes, lifted the best venue trophy in the 2013 Best Bar None awards.
Co-owner Randip Rehinsi said he and his partners changed the focus of the pub to split it into a bar and Indian restaurant when they took over in 2011.
He added: “Pubs have been closing down everywhere and the ones surviving seem to be serving food.
“I believe it’s the way forward because there’s a recession and it’s hard to get people out.
“But a pint and a curry is always a great combination.”
Entrants were visited by two judges and health and safety, noise and other categories were assessed.
Mr Rehinsi said winning the top spot over larger chains came as a shock and was a “huge” achievement for his staff.
Other venues judged outstanding included The New Fairlop Oak, in Barkingside, The Slug and Lettuce, in South Woodford, and The George, in South Woodford.
All accredited pubs were given certificates and wall plaques at a ceremony on Thursday at Valentines Mansion in Ilford.
