A special ceremony ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day left Redbridge Council Leader Keith Prince feeling “very moved”.
The City Hall ceremony on Monday was held to remember the lives of millions who died in the Holocaust, subsequent genocides and atrocities.
Cllr Prince, writing on his blog, said: “I was very moved by the special Holocaust Memorial Ceremony.
“The service provides an opportunity for remembrance of the past and to commit to creating a better future.”
Those who attended heard personal testimonies from Steven Frank - a Dutchman whose father organised false papers to enable people to flee to Switzerland during the Second World War.
Guests - made up of representatives from London boroughs, London Assembly members and faith groups - also heard from Sophie Masereka, who grew up during the Rwandan genocide in 1994.
