A consultation is now open on proposals to close 12 London fire stations to save £28.8million.

Redbridge fire stations will not be afffected under current plans but nearby stations in Chingford, Leyton and Leytonstone will each lose one of their two fire engines - meaning Redbridge firefighters may have to respond to their calls.

Around 520 firefighter posts would be cut and 18 fire engines removed.

But London Fire Brigade commissioner Ron Dobson said target response times will still be achieved.

He added: “Compared to ten years ago, the brigade attends half as many fires, a third fewer house fires and almost a third fewer incidents overall.”

The London Fire Brigades Union is running an online petition opposing station closures and cuts to services.

Union treasurer Laurence Brightman said: “These cuts are very, very dangerous and have no consideration for the safety of firefighters and the general public.”

The consultation will run until May 28.
