Redbridge Council’s regional planning committee will consider whether to allow or refuse a retrospective planning application by Apex Primary School for increased pupils, evening and weekend use and more break times.

Councillors could also delegate the decision to another committee.

The changes at the school in Argyle Road date back to September 2010 and the council is investigating the breach of previous conditions.

Apex Primary School, which is formed of two terraced houses in a residential road, was allowed 48 pupils in 2010 but now has around 110.

Ilford South MP Mike Gapes has supported residents calling for enforcement action, who have complained about noise and traffic issues.

Nearly 200 letters were sent in the consultation and petitions have been submitted, including one signed by 2,725 in support.

A council report has recommended refusing the retrospective application because “it would have a serious and adverse effect on the amenities enjoyed by residents of that area”.

School governor Mohammed Asif said: “There is a huge shortage of primary school places in the borough and we just want to be able to function like any other school in Redbridge.”
