Cabinet - more than £8.5m funding for highways agreed

More than £8.5m in funding for improvements and maintenance work on the borough’s roads was agreed by the cabinet last night.

Councillors agreed the capital programme for roads through Redbridge Council funding and money from external sources such as Transport for London (TfL).

The major works programme for 2013/14 was also agreed.

Two million pounds will be spent on major resurfacing to prevent potholes and other wearing of carriageways and footways on the borough’s roads.

A planned programme for 2013/14 has been agreed and £438,000 will be spent on “preventative maintenance” where full resurfacing is not warranted.

Street lighting will get £1,330,000 with the ageing “lighting network” in the north-west of the borough set to benefit.

Other projects include drainage renewal, minor works for people with impaired mobility and a £100,000 contribution building two pumping stations and a flood storage area in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, to limit flooding from the River Roding.

Cllr Shoaib Patel, the cabinet member for transportation, said: “I believe this is a very positive and upbeat report which will be looked on favourably.”

The cabinet also signed off on Transport for London funding including the next phase of improvement works in Manford Way, Hainault, which will cost £1,157,000, and £55,000 towards designing works for Woodford Bridge.

The cabinet agreed total budgets of £8.76m.
