Area two: Councillors support non-enforcement of Clayhall Avenue u-turn ban

Applause met the decision to oppose enforcement of a u-turn ban in Clayhall Avenue, Goodmayes, after it was noted that some people got up to four driving tickets a day there and councillors too were guilty of making the turn.

Despite the road in question not falling in the committee’s area it was debated due to its impact on Roding ward residents particularly those of Hill Farm estate.

Cllr Deakins said: “Two years ago the council decided to enforce the u-turn ban and a phenomenal number of people got tickets, some into the treble figures.”

She pointed out that no accidents have occurred at this spot.

She said: “Transport for London are looking at whether a roundabout could be put there. Until they do that it would be folly to ban this.”

Cllr Ian Bond (Liberal Democrat, Roding) said: “We do the u-turn ourselves when we visit those at the estate and when the council decided to ban this some got three or four tickets a day.

“For that reason it would be silly to have a ban.”

Previously area committee four agreed that the u-turn ban should be enforced but areas three and four would be consulted.

The councillors voted seven to four in favour of opposing the ban.
