Apex Primary School, Argyle Road, Ilford, collected food, coats, gloves and blankets for the shelter which opened last week.

Headteacher Meherun Hamid said: “The children and parents have been very good.

“We spoke about them having homes, shelter and food which some people do not have and, especially at this time of year. We need to think about how these people feel.”

The items were collected from the school on Friday by the Federation of Redbridge Muslim Organisations which has run an appeal at all Muslim organisations in the borough.
