The 85-year-old was taken away from the scene on a stretcher with a collar and spinal board after the accident in Longwood Gardens around 5.15pm.

The woman travelling with him was unhurt but 15 firefighters from Ilford, Hainault and East Ham had to cut them out of the car.

According to witnesses, it crumpled on impact with the bollards.

The man was taken to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. His condition is not known.

Police closed off part of Longwood Gardens while emergency services dealt with the accident and the 462 bus was diverted but the road was cleared by 8pm.
