Redbridge Cycling Centre is set to undergo a £180,000 revamp under new proposals being discussed by the council.

Floodlighting, a cut-through to make the track easier to use for young and disabled riders, and a four lane BMX track will be built at the popular facility, which was home to Olympians training for the London Games in 2012.

The work will be funded by Sport England, which has agreed in principle to allocate the funding for the new improvements at the site in Forest Road, Hainault.

Work is due to start in October.

Redbridge Council has also agreed to buy the centre from the Crown Estate using a grant of £309,000 from the London Marathon Charitable Trust.

The local authority has leased the site since 2008 with a one-off grant of £850,000 from the London Development Agency, but this expired in March.

Members of the council’s Health, Wellbeing, Care and Older People Service Committee will discuss the proposals on September 1.

Redbridge Cycling Centre was built in August 2008 and replaced the Eastway Cycle Circuit, which has been turned into the Velopark, where the Olympic and Paralympic Games were held.

It has purpose built roads and runs a coaching scheme for young riders.

Councillor Wes Streeting, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said, “Redbridge Cycling Centre is a well-used and popular facility in the borough.

“The investment we’ve secured guarantees the long term future of the centre and we hope the new facilities will encourage people of all ages – particularly disabled people – to visit the centre to learn to cycle or to improve their skills.”

A spokesman from the council said the additional income generated from the new improvements and money saved from no rent payments going forward mean little to no cost for the public purse.

The name will also be changed to London Marathon Trust Redbridge Cycling Centre under the scheme.
