New North Road in Hainault was “like an ice rink” after hydraulic fluid leaked from a lorry.

The road had to be closed in both directions at around 9.30pm last night after the liquid leaked from a low-loader carrying a train carriage.

Fire crews and police were involved in a clean-up operation which took several hours.

Firefighter Darren Buckley said: “It was like a skating rink.

“The low-loader had a burst pipe and it emptied all its hydraulic fluid all over the road.

“It took a few hours to clean up.”

A Met Police spokesman said the force was called just after 9.30pm.

She said: “Police were called to the scene of a road traffic disruption caused by a broken down articulated lorry that was leaking onto the highway at New North Road, Hainault.”

She said Redbridge Council highways officers spread sand across the section of highway affected.

The road was closed from Lang Close to Hainault Station until 11.49pm.

“Checks were scheduled throughout the night to ensure that the fluid on the road did not resurface to cause further hazards,” she added.
