An MP has called for residents to “dig deep” to support the London Air Ambulance, which has treated critically-ill people in the borough on several occasions this year.

Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, said the charity is a “vital lifeline to those in need” and saves lives.

“The air ambulance has unfortunately been to Redbridge a number of times this year already, most recently following the shocking stabbing of a school pupil in Barkingside just this month,” he said

“This National Air Ambulance Week I’d encourage everyone to dig deep and give what they can to support a vital service, provided by a charity that needs our help to continue to save lives.”

The London Air Ambulance has visited Redbridge 22 times in the first half of 2016 and, on average, performs 46 anaesthetics, eight open-heart surgeries and eight blood transfusions a month.

Across London, the service dispatches advanced trauma teams to critically-injured people and helped 917 people in the first six months of the year – 291 in road traffic collisions, 257 in stabbings and shootings, 224 in falls and 145 in other incidents, including incidents on rail networks and drownings.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “London’s Air Ambulance does an incredible job of providing life-saving support to those in trouble across the capital every day.

“National Air Ambulance Week is an opportunity to celebrate the crews across the country, who work tirelessly to provide this service.

“There’s lots of fun activities happening across the capital and I urge Londoners to get involved, donate and support the doctors, paramedics, pilots and staff at the coalface of emergency care.”

National Air Ambulance Week runs until Sunday.
