The 13-year-old was on her way home with friends after breaking up for Christmas at Mayfield School when she was in collision with the car shortly after 1pm in Green Lane.

Deputy headteacher Alison Jackson said the girl is being treated for a broken leg.

She added: “We are all very relieved that she’s ok.

“We do road safety things with the pupils but it just shows how cautious you have got to be.”

The teenager and her friends were in high spirits when they left school at lunchtime for the Christmas holidays but their happiness turn to horror when they witnessed the shock crash.

Mrs Jackson said: “The students were very sensible and came back into school to get staff.

“It wasn’t a very nice way for them to end the year.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said the girl was treated by paramedics for a leg injury and taken by ambulance “as a priority” to Queen’s Hospital in Romford.

The crash happened outside Al-Noor Muslim Primary School, where a spokesman said: “We send our thoughts to her friends and family and hope she gets well soon.”

Police closed Green Lane for around 45 minutes after the accident. No arrests have been made.
