Mayfield pupils rewarded for reading on trip to White Hart Lane

Pupils were rewarded for their hard work on a reading scheme with a trip to a top football stadium.

Year 8 boys from Mayfield School in Pedley Road, Goodmayes, were taken to White Hart Lane – the home of Tottenham Hotspur – after their work on the Premier League Reading Stars project.

The project, which is run by The National Literacy Trust, is designed to help “reluctant readers” fall in love with the written word and improve their reading skills.

The Reading Stars project – aimed at pupils who are passionate about football – involves an online reading challenge and a 10-week programme of football-related reading.

Mayfield English teacher Katie Dwight said: “It is central to our ethos as a faculty and a school to give students these sorts of opportunities in an area where they do not always have access to them.”
