A woman told the Recorder tonight how she saw a neighbour run back into his burning house to rescue his pet dog.

Firefighters are battling a blaze at a semi-detached house in Brunel Road, Woodford Green and say they have contained it to one side of the building. They do not know the cause yet.

Judi Porter said she saw flames coming from the ground floor bay window of the house as she came home from work.

“I saw a gentleman running into the property and obviously there were other people running around at the time screaming for him not to go into the property.

“I know he has a little white – I think a westie - dog and he came out once then went back in for a second time.”

The fire brigade had been called and Ms Porter called an ambulance because the man was still in the property.

She added the dog was taken to a vet’s and she has heard it will recover, while the owner was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Fire brigade command support officer Tony Clark confirmed the man had been taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Next door neighbour Jason Bell said he came running out when he saw the house on fire.

“I heard a pop and a blast,” he said.
