In celebration of Local Newspaper Week, which runs until Sunday, three community figures have shared their thoughts on how the Recorder’s work has made a difference.

Mike Palfreman, chief executive of Woodford Green’s Haven House Children’s Hospice, kicks off the coverage.

As a children’s hospice it’s hard to imagine how we could function without our local press, which is why Local Newspaper Week is such an important campaign.

Hospices like Haven House serve the communities in which they were created and this means connecting through the media which matter most to our families, staff and volunteers such as the trusted local paper.

For many years we have been fortunate to benefit from the fantastic support of Archant, the Recorder’s publisher, whether that’s through fundraising initiatives such as the Thames Gateway Business Awards, or via its journalists who have shared our stories week in week out.

Since opening in Woodford Green in 2003, we have supported more than 650 families, providing high quality palliative and holistic care for babies, children and young people who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions across north-east London and west Essex.

Our services include planned respite, short break and end of life care, as well as services designed to improve emotional and physical wellbeing. Providing such vital care would not have been possible, and will not in the future, without the generous support of our communities.

With only 23% of our funding coming from the government, we need to raise £3.6 million this year to keep our doors open. With Children’s Hospice Week taking place on May 22-29, there has never been a more appropriate time to support Haven House and your local paper.
