“It all started with a kiss” for a couple who are now celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary.

Edward Mann, 92, and Annie Mann, 90, from Verderes Road, Chigwell, have been reminiscing about how they got together, 70 years on after they exchanged their vows, on June 24 1944.

He said: “It was a wonderful time for us and it all started with a kiss. We have been married now for 70 years and I have never regretted one day.”

The pair met on a sunny day in May when Edward and a friend of his was walking through the park when they spotted two girls and went over to speak to them.

Edward said: “I didn’t really want to go over but my friend was keen so I kind of tagged along and mingled with the friend of the girl he wasn’t speaking to.”

But it was only after an awkward moment when Edward wanted to leave once his friend went off with the girl that he was asked by her friend to stay so maybe she could put him in touch with her sister, not knowing that he was about to meet the love of his life.

Edward said: “I don’t know what it was about her that I liked but you know when you just take an instant like to someone? Well that’s what it was like for me.

“We soon got to know each other and had our first kiss - and what a sweet kiss it was!”

The couple then went on to marry a year later at St Mary’s church, in Plaistow, Newham, in 1944 but sadly did not have a honeymoon as it was considered too dangerous for people to travel because of the war.

Edward said: “It didn’t matter that we didn’t go anywhere for a honeymoon as we was just happy being together and we still are today.”

The pair now have five children and more than 20 grand children and great children and have been living in Chigwell for around 50 years, and will be celebrating this momentous occasion today when they go for dinner with their whole family.

Edward added: “It has been an amazing 70 years and I am looking forward to hopefully many more together.”
