Discover the legacy left behind by empire and partition in a touring photography exhibition that’s stopping off in Ilford for five weeks.

Artist William Titley and Redbridge College students will be displaying the photographs from the Lahore – Chandigarh: A Tale of Two Cities exhibition in the Exchange Ilford shopping centre from June 11.

The Redbridge students will curate the exhibition of Titley’s 200 photos alongside an additional collaborative exhibition, which Titley and the students worked on together.

Titley’s photographs explore the impact of partition - the separation of India and Pakistan after British rule - in the cities of Pakistan’s Lahore and India’s Chandigarh.

The artist and University of Central Lancashire lecturer said: “The idea of communities being separated by a political border seems ludicrous and I wanted the work to encourage people to imagine the two cities as one place and to generate dialogue around issues of displacement.”

Lahore - Chandigarh has already toured India, Pakistan and America. The collection of black and white stills from the ancient cities will be accompanied by a series of talks and workshops during its stay in Ilford.

The exhibition opens at 6pm next Wednesday - those interested have until July 19 to view it.
