A poet, who got the chance to meet Rebecca Adlington after she was chosen to write a poem celebrating the London 2012 Games, has visited the Olympic Park to see her work displayed.

Deborah Stevenson, of Ilford, was one of the 12 Poets of 2012 who jointly wrote a poem inspired by an athlete which forms part of the National Lottery’s showcasing plot in the park.

Before coming together to share their ideas, the poets each met an Olympic hopeful to learn about what it takes to become a full time athlete and Deborah attended a training session with the Team BG swimmer.

Rebecca saw the nine totems on which the poem has been displayed during the Olympics and Paralympics last week.

She said: “The whole experience of meeting Rebecca and then working with other poets has been amazing. Hearing the poem which I helped write being read out on the Olympic Park and knowing that so many people will have heard it really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“Rebecca made me see just how much dedication and sacrifice it takes to become an Olympian and I hope that this shines through in the poem.”
