Vijay Varu, from Ilford, offered advice to students on film-making during a Q and A session held at Redbridge College’s Chadwell Heath campus on Thursday.

The director, whose most recent film, 833, won the audience category for best film at the San Jose Film Festival in California earlier this year, said that self-belief is key to being a successful film-maker.

“You should believe in yourself and do what you need to do to get where you want to be and don’t listen to the naysayers,” said 33-year-old Vijay.

“Believe you can do it - be motivated and put in the hard work and set yourself goals.

“Don’t bring harm to your wellbeing or that of others, and don’t hurt others or cheat other competitors in pursuit of your dreams.

“Therefore play fair and respectfully, which is hard to do in a competitive industry, but I believe in doing the right thing, and Karma.”

The student’s watched a screening of 833 before the Q and A and the college’s deputy principal, Linnia Khemdoudi, believes it was an invaluable experience for the students.

“We really valued Vijay coming here today to show his film and inspire and motivate our students.

“Listening to what he has achieved and his advice about the industry will be invaluable to our students looking to make their careers within it.”
