The stories of the hundreds of Belgian refugees who settled in the borough during the Great War are set to be told.

Redbridge Museum has launched Guests of the Nation – Belgian Refugees, the First World War and Redbridge at Valentines Mansion.

It will explore the lives of all those who came to Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford to escape the horrors the war was wreaking in their country.

Many stayed at Valentines Mansion, in Emerson Road, Ilford, and the display includes a recreation of one of their rooms.

The free exhibition, available during normal opening times, will run until May 31.

It is part of the museum’s wider exhibition Redbridge and the First World War, which is running until May 30 at its site in Redbridge Central Library, in Clements Road, Ilford.
