The mother of a disabled woman is delighted after a changing places toilet has been installed in Ilford.

The facility in The Exchange shopping centre will help meet the specialised needs of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and is larger than a standard toilet with extra equipment including a hoist.

Last year Enid Hart, 47, of Grove Road, Chadwell Heath called on the council to install such a unit with campaigner calling the lack of provisions in the borough “inhumane”.

Enid could not change her 29-year-old daughter Claire – who is wheelchair-bound and suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy - which would limit her time out in Ilford.

“I think it is really great news - it was about time and desperately needed,” she said.

“I hope other areas, will follow suit.

“It will change my life, I will be able to take my daughter into Ilford and spend more time and money there - thank you to the Recorder for getting this issue noticed.”

The facility was installed by Redbridge Council from Community £60,000 worth ofInfrastructure Levy money and the Exchange is also investing in a £600K “high-quality family room on level 1 of the mall”.
