Promising pupils are due to become published poets after their work on conflict and war impressed at a nation-wide poetry competition.

The 12 budding poets from Forest Academy, Hainault, have won their place in an anthology after taking part in the War of Words competition.

Winners of the competition, which is held by Young Writers - an initiative designed to engage young people in creative writing, will find their poetry held at libraries across the country, including the British Library in London.

The poetry pupils, from years seven to 10, also won book tokens and now have the chance to win cash prizes, with the school’s top three poets having the chance to win between £250 and £1,000.

Young Writers editor Cheryl Whitfield said that the poems were chosen for their “perception, imagination, expression and creative use of language.”

Forest English teacher Natasha Kuriakose said: “We are proud of all the students that took part and are especially pleased that the stellar work of these budding poets will be published this September.”
