Wheelchair sport charity WheelPower are handing out grants of up to £1,500 which can be put towards buying equipment such as basketball wheelchairs, hand cycles or racing wheelchairs.

The money can also be used to fund training and coaching opportunities.

Rotary Clubs in Redbridge helped raise thousands of pounds towards the scheme with fundraising events.

WheelPower said there was a 50 per cent increase in people wanting to try wheelchair sport with WheelPower after the 2012 Paralympics.

Chief excutive Martin McElhatton said: “The charity can provide the essential equipment to get started.”

So far, WheelPower has provided more than 600 new sports wheelchairs to individuals, clubs and groups through the Wheel Appeal.

Eve Conway Ghazi, the former district governor for Rotary in London, has helped to raise over £6,000 for the Wheel Appeal.

She said: “Sport provides tremendous health and social benefits at all levels particularly for disabled people, and I’m delighted to help.”
