The government will spend £400 million removing dangerous cladding from tower blocks across the country, the prime minister has announced.

Theresa May announced that it will fully fund the removal work carried out by councils and housing associations.

It comes after concerns were raised about the combustible nature of tower block cladding in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire in June last year, which killed 71 people.

Some councils have already started work on removing and replacing cladding on tower blocks.

Mrs May told MPs that the work would cost an estimated £400m, adding: “Councils and housing associations must remove dangerous cladding quickly but paying for these works must not undermine their ability to do important maintenance and repair work.”
