Goodmayes school expanding to cater for 840 extra pupils

A Goodmayes secondary school has got the green light to go ahead with a development that will increase its intake by 840 pupils.
Mayfield School, Pedley Road, applied to Redbridge Council to build a three-storey classroom building, a sports hall and two games areas.
The council’s regulatory committee approved the application on Wednesday of last week at Redbridge Town Hall.
The school roll will be able to increase from 1,460 pupils to 2,300 with 80 additional staff.
The development, in the northern part of the existing school site, will also see improved pedestrian and cycle access from Mayfield Road, which would involve the demolition of the caretaker’s lodge.
There will also be 105 extra car parking spaces and 120 cycle spaces.
Regulatory committee chairman Cllr Richard Hoskins said: “We found the proposal acceptable as there will still be enough open space for the pupils to enjoy at the school.”
