The sacrifices of the soldiers of the First World War were captured in moving photographs taken around the borough this week.

On Monday – the 100th anniversary of Britain declaring war on Germany – a flag was raised in Aldborough Hatch.

As captured on camera by Ron Jeffries, the flag read “Lest we forget” and featured an image of soldiers and a poppy.

Members of the public joined in with the borough’s main event on Sunday, a drumhead service and parade at the steps of Redbridge Town Hall, in High Road, Ilford.

Photographs by John Coombes, the chairman of Barkingside Royal British Legion, and iwitness user Tony Webb show the scene, where more than 200 well-wishers gathered.

Veterans were among those who took part in the parade.

The Ilford War Memorial Gardens Action Group’s open day on Saturday included displays by organisations such as the Royal British Legion and a talk by information and heritage librarian Ian Dowling.
