The honour comes after Newham Council passed a resolution to present the men and women of G Company, 7th Battalion The Rifles with the Freedom of the London Borough of Newham, in recognition of their gallant and courageous service to the country and as a token of respect to all the men and women of the borough who have and are still serving in the Regiment.

The G Company 7 Rifles will be presented with the Freedom Scroll on Saturday. Residents are invited to listen to the Territorial Army’s Waterloo Band & Bugles who will play a selection of music at 10.15am at Stratford Park, in West Ham Lane, Stratford.

A parade will start at 10.30am with the troops marching through Stratford Broadway and returning to Old Town Hall Stratford, where they will be presented with the Freedom Scroll outside Old Town Hall at 11am.

Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales said: “Saying a simple thank you for what G Company of the 7th Battalion of the Rifles Regiment does for us and the contribution they make to our community seems such a small gesture but is one I know the unit greatly appreciates.

“The support these volunteers receive from their families, friends and employers as they step forward to serve the nation as a vital part of the British Army is so valuable.”

Sir Robin added: “This is to show our pride and support for their commitment and dedication. The Freedom of the Borough is the highest distinction we can bestow. I am proud, on behalf of Newham residents, to honour the 7th Rifles, who have earned a special place in the hearts of Newham people for their bravery, commitment and sacrifice.”

“In Newham we want to recognise the contribution of service personnel; through prioritising social housing for local servicemen and women; helping them to find work when they leave the armed forces; and by awarding the Freedom of the Borough to 7th Rifles.”

“In presenting this award we recognise not only the sacrifices of regiment members but also the major contribution their families have made for the safety and security of our country. The ceremony is a fitting way for residents to honour the military service of local people.”

“The fact they deal with it with such honesty and openness fills me with admiration for how well they manage to fit back in with normal everyday life. We should all be grateful that they can combine their soldiering so well with everything else that is expected of them on Civvy Street.”

Major Larry Davis, Officer Commanding, G Coy said: “I am delighted to receive the Freedom of Newham on behalf of the Rifles. The Regiment is honoured to receive such a high civic award and thanks the Mayor and the community of Newham for all their ongoing and unstinting support.”
