Residents on an estate which saw a large blaze last year have received months of targeted action to educate them about fire safety.

The high-rise blocks of flats on the Orchard Estate, Woodford Green, have been visited frequently by firefighters from London Fire Brigade as part of the Know Your Plan campaign.

In August last year, 81 firefighters tackled a fire at a 10th floor flat in Liston Way, which also damaged two other homes.

Mark Simons, manager at Ilford fire station, said: “We thought we would target this estate as it is all high-rise blocks and because of the large fire we had last year.

“We go along and offer fire home safety advice to every tenant; we are going through the blocks systematically. We have probably done three-quarters of the estate so far and intend to finish it off.”

The Liston Way fire spurred the brigade to begin this programme, but there have been other incidents in the past.

Mr Simons said: “We had a couple of incidents in the flats, [such as] with rubbish, but the large incident really made us think we should do some follow-up work.”

“The flat is still burned-out now and hasn’t been repaired,” he added.

The visits see firefighters give residents advice on what they should do if there is a fire or if they see smoke coming into their flat, and how they should contact the brigade.

Mr Simons added: “They [high-rise fires] are more high-profile incidents and affect more than the individual flat normally because people are worried about being able to escape if a flat near them is on fire.

“We would advise people to look at the London Fire Brigade website if they have any worries or need advice.”
