Thousands of worshippers turned out at Valentines Park in Ilford this morning to celebrate Eid.
Thousands of worshippers turned out at Valentines Park in Ilford on Monday to celebrate Eid.
The annual event, organised by Redbridge Islamic Centre, saw families and friends brave the rain to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Taking to Twitter, Taz Hossain (@tazhossain) said: “#EID in the park. #Ilford #Valentines. 10,000 people turned up in the rain to pray. Wow.”
And Harun Khan (@harakh) wrote: “Huge crowds at Redbridge Islamic Centre Eid in the Park, Valentines Park #EidMubarak.”
Redbridge Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, who was at the event, tweeted: “#EidInThePark was more #EidInTheRain today. @wesstreeting All Ramadan, we have a heatwave and the one day we’re not fasting...monsoon.”
Politicians also took to the social network to wish Eid Mubarak.
Cllr Wes Streeting (@wesstreeting) said: “#EidMubarak to all my Muslim friends and followers. Enjoy the celebrations!
And Cllr Paul Canal (@RedbridgeBlue) wrote: “To friends and residents celebrating, and to Muslims around the world – Eid Mubarak!”
Ilford South MP Mike Gapes took to his website to wish his Muslim constituents “a happy and memorable Eid ul-Fitr”.
“The special day of Eid provides an opportunity to reflect on the great contributions members of the Muslim community have made to my constituency’s and to our country’s rich and diverse heritage,” he wrote.
“I am proud of the great contribution Muslims have made and are making to our community in Ilford, Redbridge and throughout our country.”
