Efforts to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in a town centre car park have been recognised with an award.

The Exchange Ilford Shopping Centre has been awarded the Park Mark Safer Parking award, an initiative supported by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in car parks.

According to Met Police statistics, there were 83,647 car crimes in London between May 2012 and May 2013, with Redbridge accounting for just over 3,000 of these.

The award highlights the management and maintenance of the car park, CCTV levels and security team surveillance, lighting, signage and cleanliness.

Centre manager Rubie Charalambous said: “I’m extremely proud of our centre operations and security team.

“They work very hard to maintain a safe environment for our customers and it’s great for them to be recognised and awarded for their efforts.

“We’re delighted to say, we are officially the safest car park in the town.”
