Police pulled over Adedoyim Ayeni when they spotted her speaking on her phone while driving in Fencepiece Road, Barkingside on May 25.

Checks revealed that the 27-year-old, who was alone in the car, was a provisional licence holder and should not have been driving unnacompanied, Barkingside Magistrates’ heard on Thursday.

She was charged with using a handheld mobile phone while driving and driving a motor vehicle not in accordance with a licence.

After pleading guilty to both charges, Ayeni, of Gallions Drive, Barking, told magistrates her husband had given her a lift to a meeting in Barkingside, but he was forced to take their sick child home.

She said she therefore drove the car by herself and had been on the phone getting directions when police stopped her.

The care assistant told magistrates it was the first time she had driven a car unaccompanied.

Chairman of the bench William Dale fined her £110, endorsed her licence with five points and ordered she pay £85 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
