Sentencing of the six men this week found guilty of Shammi Atwal’s manslaughter has been deferred until next month.
Vidmantas Gorskoves, 26, of Grange Road, E13; Aurimas Diliunas, 27, of Rosslyn Road, Barking; Farhan Sheikh, 39, of Thornhill Gardens, Barking; Deibidas Sumskas, 25, of Ottley Road, E16; Reiniks Kivers, 28, of no fixed abode; and Edgaras Balezantis, 25, of Tollgate Road, E6, will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on June 13.
They were convicted of Barking businessman Mr Atwal’s killing on Tuesday.
During a hearing held this afternoon, judge Nick Hiliard said he wanted to sentence the men together but felt unable to do so until a pre-sentence report about Kivers had been prepared.
He apologised to Mr Atwal’s family, many of whom were in the public gallery, for the delay, but said it was in the interests of public safety.
“The question of the future risk he poses should be on the agenda,” he said,
The Judge added that he would be “failing in his duty” if he did not request more information about Kivers’ previous convictions, many of which occured in his native Lithuania.
Mr Atwal, who ran the Glenn and Co cash and carry in River Road, was chasing after the gang, who were armed, after a robbery attempt on October 14, when he was hit by a lorry. The trial heard he was “pushed” into its path by one of the group during a struggle.
