Keith Ng, 25, threw crates of beer at Moslem Saadati before smashing a bottle over his head and slashing him with the shards of glass in the vicious assault in Tesco, in High Road, Goodmayes.

The victim suffered 10in gashes to his chest in the unprovoked attack, which started when he was waiting with a friend to pay for his shopping, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Mandy McLean told the court how Mr Saadati and his friend were waiting in the check-out queue when Ng, who was behind them with another man, started shouting.

The defendant, of Winchester Road, South Chingford, picked items off shelves to throw at Mr Saadati before slashing him with the broken bottle.

The victim and his friend hid in another part of the store until police arrived after Ngs friend implied he had a gun, the court was told.

Ng admitted to police he had drunk seven cans of lager but when interviewed claimed the victim started the confrontation.

A woman, believed to be Ngs mother, was threatened with arrest after shouting abuse at the judge from the public gallery.

Judge John Lafferty told Ng, whose father had recently died at the time of the attack and who supports his girlfriend and mother, that he had no option but to jail him.

He said: You have clearly got very drunk and were under the influence of drugs.

Its very lucky indeed the victim did not suffer more serious injuries.

The defendant was sentenced to 14 months in prison for wounding with intent, and one month in prison for unlawful wounding, to run concurrently.

He pleaded guilty to both charges.
